As is tradition, Google will release the new version of Android at the same time as its new Nexus devices. Both phones will be the first to ship with Android M, while the rest of us will have to wait to update our devices.

Android M – or Android 6.0 Marshmallow, to give it its full name – brings some major bug fixes, gives more control over app permissions, and brings support for two new features: Android Pay and Now on Tap.

Android Pay is Google's take on Apple Pay, and lets you pay for goods and services by tapping your phone against the card reader. It will replace Google Wallet.

Now on Tap, meanwhile, will serve up information on films, restaurants and more from within various apps. Texting someone about a restaurant you want to try? You'll be able to book a table from within the text app using Now on Tap. Amazing.

Now, the meat of the devices.

The LG-made follow-up to the Nexus 5 is expected to sport a 5.2-inch screen, a USB-C port and dual front-facing speakers. Inside, we're expecting a Snapdragon 808 chip with 3GB of RAM.

It'll also have a fingerprint sensor on the back.

Huawei's successor to the Nexus 6 will have a 5.76-inch QHD screen and metal body, along with the same fingerprint sensor and USB-C port as its smaller sibling.

Expect them to give the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus a run for their money.

5 Price

There's been no indication of price yet, but we can make some predictions based on previous Nexus devices.

They're known for being affordable, though as the specs have improved, the prices have gone up. They're more mid-range devices than wallet-friendly mobiles.

As such, we'd expect the 5.2-incher to cost roughly the same as the Moto X Play, i.e. starting at £279. That's far cheaper than some phones, but pricier than the OnePlus 2, which only costs £239.

The larger of the phones will naturally be more expensive. We'd wager it will cost around £330.

With these and the new iPhones, phone lovers are in for a very merry Christmas.
